Avian flu: authorities recommend avoiding touching dead animals

The Gaspésie-Île-de-la-Madeleine regional public health department reminds the public of the need to take precautionary measures when a dead animal is found, while two cases of avian flu have been confirmed.

Several dead birds, gannets, were seen on the beaches of the Magdalen Islands by citizens, according to authorities.

“As at all times, if you observe a dead animal, it is important not to touch it”, recommends in a press release the regional direction of public health.

At least four Quebec farms have been hit by avian flu, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

Although the risk of transmission in humans is low, the virus can be transmitted in the event of close and prolonged contact in a closed environment with infected birds.
