Arthez de Bearn: A new route to ensure safety for pilgrims

The new route was created primarily for those who are pilgrims or hikers who use the GR 65 to pass through the village.

The Voie de Puy is an important route on the Chemins de Saint-Jacques. It attracts thousands of walkers every year from spring through autumn. They also take the chance to visit the small Romanesque chapel in Caubin, which has been a historical monument since the 12th Century.

This eastern entrance to Arthez poses a danger for walkers. Fabienne Costedoat Diu, a departmental councilor, is behind this development. "I asked for the safe construction of this departmental road in order to increase safety for pilgrims and pedestrians heading up to Arthez. The entire cost of this pedestrian path that runs from Chemin de Benicet up to the coast is covered by the OSNI (non individualised security operations), envelope which was allocated to each departmental councillor. The cost total is 30,000 Euros.

Pilgrims will now be able to enter the village with complete safety thanks to the two chicanes installed further away.
