Animals: Viehscheide in the Allgäu after the Corona break, sometimes without marquees

After two forced Corona breaks, some Allgäu communities have said goodbye to cattle drives with festival tents. In Obermaiselstein (district of Oberallgäu), the approximately 1,400 cows are no longer brought to a central place in the village at the end of the alpine summer, but are loaded at several places without regular operation for further transport. In Maierhöfen (district of Lindau), the animals are brought directly from the Alps with transporters. Separately, there is a local festival at the end of the alpine summer.

In contrast, many other communities would have opted for Viehscheide like before the pandemic, said the managing director of Allgäu GmbH, Bernhard Joachim. Among them are also popular vacation spots with big celebrations like Oberstaufen, Oberstdorf, Bad Hindelang and Pfronten. After all, the cattle sheaths are a "reason to travel" for many people - and thus extend the main season in the Allgäu beyond the holiday season.

During the cattle drives, alpine shepherds in the Allgäu drive around a third of the approximately 31,000 cattle from the Alps, some of them decorated, back down into the valley. There they are "divorced" by their shepherds and returned to their owners. This is traditionally celebrated in many places: with music, stalls, fairground rides and thousands of visitors.
