Animals: Dog falls into twelve meter deep shaft

A dog fell into a shaft around twelve meters deep at Heidelberg Castle. Officials were able to open an iron gate in the castle wall with a master key on Friday evening and free the animal from the shaft, the police announced on Saturday.

The dog owner had reported to the police via an emergency call that her four-legged friend had first fallen down a wall and then landed in the shaft. A spokesman could not say whether she let her dog run free. After the two were reunited, they went to an animal hospital to make sure the dog wasn't seriously injured, it said.

According to the spokesman, the animal appeared to be fine after the fall. It was initially unclear whether this assumption was confirmed after the clinic visit.
