Animals: Bear anesthesia: Bärenwald Stuer starts with rounds in season

The Bear Sanctuary in Stuer (Mecklenburg Lake District) starts the main season 2023 with a major investigation. As a spokeswoman for the animal protection foundation Vier Pfoten (Hamburg) said on Friday, during the visit from April 18th, a third of the animals - i.e. four brown bears - carefully examined by experts. You will be anesthetized so that in addition to the condition of your teeth, your skeleton and internal organs can also be checked at your leisure. A team from the Berlin Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research and wildlife doctor Mandana Pötsch are traveling to the site.

The bear sanctuary currently has twelve animals from inappropriate husbandry and was opened in 2006 by the Animal Welfare Foundation. Most of the bears have damage to their teeth or hips as a result of their once poor husbandry - mostly in enclosures that are too narrow and not animal-friendly, the spokeswoman said. Three bears died of old age in 2022. At 2.20 meters tall, brown bear Balou, one of the largest bears, is planned as a "patient" this time. There are also two males and one female.

The area has 18 hectares of forest, open spaces, artificial swimming pools and streams where natural instincts can be lived out again. Around 96,000 visitors came in 2022. The Bärenwald is financed by donations and admission, which was increased slightly in 2023 due to higher costs. According to the foundation, around 100 brown bears in Europe still live in enclosures that are too small, especially in animal parks or with circus operators.
