American female soccer players will be paid as much as their male counterparts

This time it's final. A few months after putting forward a preliminary agreement, the American Football Federation (USSF) announced on Wednesday that it had reached a "historic" agreement with the associations of players of its selections, which formalizes equal salaries between the women's team and the men's team.

"The United States Soccer Federation (USSF), United States Women's National Team Players Association (USWNTPA), and United States National Soccer Team Players Association (USNSTPA ) have agreed historic collective bargaining terms, the first of their kind, which ensure equal pay and set the global standard to drive international football forward," the federation said in a statement, adding that "both agreements collective will run until 2028 and that the remuneration will be identical including for the FIFA World Cup, as well as for the commercial income for the two teams. »

The announcement comes a few months after that of a first preliminary agreement of the federation with a group of players, including the star Megan Rapinoe, who had started legal proceedings against the body in 2019. The American federation had then already committed to pay the women's national team at the same level as its men's team.

“This is truly a historic moment. These agreements change the sport forever here in the United States, and they have the potential to change the sport around the world, President Cindy Parlow Cone said in the same statement. I am grateful for the commitment and collaboration of the men's and women's national teams and I am incredibly proud of the hard work that has led to this moment. Everyone who cares about our sport should share this pride as we look forward to working together to develop football for generations to come. »

With four World Cup victories, and as many gold medals at the Olympic Games, the United States women's national soccer team is the most successful in the history of the sport among women. For their part, the boys, who will go to Qatar in a few months, had failed to qualify for the Russian World Cup in 2018.

The 2026 World Cup will take place from June to July 2026 in North America and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
