The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has stated during his visit to the Canary Islands that Spain's position with respect to Western Sahara, as a result of the letter sent by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to the King of Morocco, Mohamed VI , can serve to "unlock" a conflict that has lasted half a century.

In a joint appearance with the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, he assessed that the solution must be limited to the UN mandate and accepted by the two parties in dispute. This statement is close to the position of the Canarian president who defends that "any proposal on the Sahara has to be accepted by Morocco and the Polisario Front" since he considers that it is the only way for the solution to the conflict to be "lasting, fair and accepted" by both parties.

«Any proposal that is put on the table has to be accepted by the kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front. If there is no agreement, there is no proposal », he expressed as a result of the letter between the president of the Spanish Government and the Moroccan king. For Torres, the solution "must be done respecting human rights and, if possible, as soon as possible and always having the United Nations as a guarantee."

In addition, Minister Albares has commented that the moment is "ideal" after the appointment of the Italian-Swedish diplomat Staffan de Mistura as the new 'personal envoy' after two years with the post vacant because there were "vetoes".
