Air traffic: Security service warning strike at Munich Airport

There were longer delays at Munich Airport on Friday morning due to a warning strike by the security service. Baggage control staff walked out. Long queues formed in front of the controls, at times reaching as far as the airport building. According to the government of Upper Bavaria, the waiting time in the morning was three hours. Only a few flights were initially canceled.

The five-hour warning strike began at 5 a.m. While initially there were no passenger traffic jams, the situation steadily worsened in the morning. Most airlines had informed their customers well in advance. Nevertheless, many passengers were annoyed by the long waiting time. According to Verdi, two-thirds of the employees assigned to the duty roster took part in the warning strike. The government of Upper Bavaria, which is responsible for the security company SGM, said that more than half of the employees had participated in the warning strike.

The action was part of the industrial action in the public sector, the Verdi union wants to underpin its wage demands in the collective bargaining dispute with municipalities and the federal government. She wants to push through 10.5 percent more wages for the nationwide 2.5 million employees of the municipalities and the federal government, but at least 500 euros more a month. Employers offer five percent more for a two-year term and a one-off payment of 2,500 euros. The third round of negotiations is at the end of March, until then there are warning strikes in the various branches of the public service.
