Act of violence: young people injured in train with ax-like object

A 37-year-old man threatened passengers on a regional train from Cottbus to Frankfurt (Oder) and injured a young person with an ax-like object. This was reported by a spokesman for the southern police department according to previous findings. The man got on the train in the small town of Guben on the Polish border.

Witnesses said that he then quickly began to threaten passengers. He damaged parts of the interior with the axe-like object. He is said to have destroyed monitors, as the police spokesman said. The man then met a 17 year old teenager. She suffered a head injury, the spokesman said. Emergency services arrested the suspect, who police say is a Polish citizen.

So far, the police have not been able to provide any information about the motive and the background. The injured teenager was taken to the hospital. According to the first findings, there is no danger to life, said the spokesman.

Police were notified of the incident around 1:20 p.m. The emergency services then found an ax-like object on the suspected 37-year-old in Guben. The spokesman was initially unable to say what exactly it was. Hours after the act of violence, several police cars and parts of a warning tape could still be seen in front of the station.

No alcohol or drugs involved

The man is said to have walked through several wagons of the regional train. The spokesman for the police department said it was a train on the RE1 line of Deutsche Bahn.

According to current knowledge, alcohol or drugs were not involved in the suspect. The investigators secured tracks in the afternoon and questioned passengers on the train. The crime scene work had been completed, it was said later in the afternoon.

The arrested man first came to a police inspection. He should be questioned, but does not have to admit it. The police have not yet been able to speak to the injured girl either, a spokesman said later in the afternoon. There is currently no evidence of a religious or political motive for the crime.

In February, a serious crime occurred on a regional train from Kiel to Hamburg. A Palestinian stabbed other passengers with a knife. Two young people died and five others were injured, some seriously. The suspect, who has several previous convictions, had just been released from custody.
