Accidents: ICE crashes into construction site vehicle on level crossing

An ICE drove into a vehicle standing directly on a level crossing near Hamburg. No one was injured in the accident on Tuesday morning just before 6 a.m., a federal police spokesman said. Why the construction vehicle was there is now being determined.

The route between Hamburg and Bremen had to be closed at Meckelfeld in the district of Harburg. Long-distance trains were diverted and delayed.

In the accident, the bogie of the ICE train derailed, said the spokesman for the federal police. The approximately 150 passengers in the ICE, which was heading towards Munich, could have left the scene of the accident by bus. A shuttle service has been set up.

According to the spokesman, the driver was not in the construction vehicle that was parked on the level crossing. He said he got on the rails with the tires and got stuck. The federal police are now investigating dangerous interventions in rail traffic.
