Accidents: Driverless truck crashes into police car on A64 near Trier

A driverless truck rolled about two kilometers on the Autobahn 64 near Trier and finally crashed into a manned patrol car standing on the Biewerbach Viaduct. According to his own statements, the truck driver had technical problems with his brake system late Thursday evening, which he wanted to fix on the hard shoulder of the highway, as a police spokesman said early Friday morning. He got out to check the truck - the vehicle started moving "unpredictably", as it was said. The driver then jumped off.

The truck picked up speed and hit the left and right crash barrier several times. Then he crashed into the manned patrol car of the highway police on the hard shoulder with full force. The officials who wanted to block the bridge for oncoming traffic because of an imminent heavy transport were slightly injured. The truck driver was also injured when he jumped off. All three were taken to a hospital for observation.

The police estimated the property damage at around 250,000 euros. For the duration of the rescue work, the A64 was full for a short time and then closed for around three hours. After consultation with the public prosecutor's office, a technical assessment of the truck was ordered.
