A humpback whale that was sighted and untangled a few days ago in Cala Millor de Mallorca was found this Thursday on the beach of the Valencian town of Tavernes de la Valldigna, extremely weak and with several cuts on its dorsal fin.

The rescue team from the Fundación Oceanogràfic went to the area to assess the condition of the animal, which eventually died.

Later, the technicians evaluated the possibility of taking him out to the sand to proceed with the necropsy and to know the causes of death.

The size of the whale, approximately twenty-five tons and twelve meters long, and its proximity to the coast, complicated the operation of towing it to the open sea, since the animal had several injuries to its dorsal fin and was unable to continue swimming.

"Given the serious condition and its size, the chances of rescue were nil. We would generate more injuries and complicate his condition and, possibly, tomorrow he would appear again in the sand", explained José Luis Crespo, head of Conservation at the Fundación Oceanogràfic.

Civil Guard, Local Police, Tavernes de la Valldigna Town Council and Technicians from the Ministry were also present at the operation.
