Motherhood is the new Album from Klaus Doldinger's Passport | culture

It is one of the last Interviews before the Corona-Lockdown: Klaus Doldinger, jazz musician, saxophonist, composer, legend has taken the time to talk about his new Album "Motherhood".

The musician, who lives in Icking, in the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, sitting in the rooms of the record company in the glockenbachviertel district of Munich. On the walls: Gold records from artists who were not yet born, as Klaus Doldinger was already making music and are likely to remain barely in business as long as he. 12. May he celebrates 84. Birthday, and today, his new record "Motherhood". So his Combo recorded two albums: "I feel so free" (1969), and "Doldinger's Motherhood" (1970) was the end of the Sixties. With his group Passport Klaus Doldinger has interpreted the pieces now fresh.

The new Album will be announced as a "location determination". Where to situate yourself?

Klaus Doldinger : For a musician who was traveling the world, this is a difficult question. (Laughs.) Ultimately, the location of a person is where he has lived for a long time. For me, the many places and all have influenced me. But Germany is my location, nevertheless, me in the early years of the temptation to drag in the United States. Last but not least due to the different cultural understanding, I have preferred to stay here.

Where do you see the differences?

band: With us, there are more points of contact between the so-called E - and U-music, including Jazz.

And where to find your music site?

band: Of a number of genres. Me also never particularly interested in: the main thing is, we can play, and the Band is good. Because that was always very important to me: to have a strong cast.

what feeling do you have the old Motherhood-plates back on, you have interpreted now?

band: Well, they're not all that old. The only...

...half a century ago.

band: (Laughs heartily, thinks about the question for a long time.) Much of what we play today, is based on the modernity – quite far. Else in turn. It depends on what area of the melody comes, which we interpret. When we play music I've written in the sixties for a movie, it is another challenge to implement this today, appropriately, as a piece that is born out of the Jazz.

this Is the advantage of the Jazz that he is free from current fashions?

band: The Beautiful thing about Jazz is that you can ride free! In Jazz, there is a different concept of Time than in the other Genres – because you can Express yourself the way you want: You're not set on a specific period of time.

It is surprising how current the Material sounds. Goods composed the pieces at the time, so timeless?

band: Yes!

you Were ahead of your time?

band: Can be. I've made but never great thoughts. For me only matters how convincing that comes across in what we play.

What is the role of the Studio technology played?

band: We recorded the Songs at the end of the sixties with the technology of the time. I thought to myself: If we produce the pieces today, time digital, then you have a greater Chance for Survival.

It is interesting that you use this term. You as a composer, of thoughts, of what the title is – perhaps a self-outlast?

band: no, not at all! But due to my activities on the Supervisory Board of the Gema I get, how many data are collected by thousands of composers and musicians – that is the madness. There is a clear that the Survival of the music is of course an issue. In the classics you should be very pleased that so many of the works have survived over the centuries. In Jazz, there are Similar. For a musician this is the biggest award ever, if his works be played years later and are known to the audience and not only for the experts.

In classical, in Blues and in Jazz, the separation between composer and performer has already taken place. In the Pop and rock music, it looks differently. What, for example, from the Songs of the Rolling Stones, if the Band one day?

band: There will always be people that interpret things like that – and are perhaps even known.

Back to the Motherhood-pieces: this published at the time under the Pseudonym Paul Nero. Why?

band: It's a fairy tale in front of me today, how much we produced. The idea came up that I was receiving a plate under a Pseudonym – and twelve-Paul-Nero-albums were. Under his own name, I've played almost exclusively his own compositions – as Nero the Repertoire of the Charts, what made it fun. So the idea with the Passport one or the other pop-song record came out then.

keyword pop song: The pieces of the new album are incredibly danceable. This is a quality criterion for you?

band: I originally came from that corner and I was already in the fifties important that people dance to our tunes. Eventually, I asked myself the question, why I don't write even once to this music.

The features of the Passport-concerts – a "wild" wasn't there actually. You play the saxophone, the electric guitar. This is an Instrument with a limelight-quality?

band: Jooo! It is! However, it is also suitable to play in a very moderate in the expression field of classical music. In any case, I placed value on my wind Instrument conform to what is for the classic necessary. I have carefully studied what their colleagues are doing, when you play Mozart or Bach – and what are the possibilities for the freer Interpretation, there is.

you and your Passport Are colleagues, based on the desire of musical border-crossing, including experimentation, bolder than the
young generation of musicians?

band: It is, I believe, only a question of whether you can or not. The possibilities of expression are virtually unlimited – a musician uses them in this way and the other differently.

by genre boundaries have never been of interest to...

band: developed, and I have thought about it more. However, I was surprised that I was able to play things in such different ways – also inspired by what other colleagues.

If you read Interviews with them, and at some point it is always your music to the "crime scene" and Wolfgang Petersen's "das Boot". We have now talked for an hour, neither the one nor the other. The missing you?

band: no. This is only a part of the Total picture. It's all working out, we never had to really put on the pressure. I can only say: Dear God, thank you that I was devoted to.
