While there are now more than five million cases of coronavirus in the world, the balance sheet is increasing in Brazil. The country of Jair Bolsonaro, who had already passed the milestone of 1, 000 deaths daily, may 20, has now exceeded the threshold of 20 000 dead. 1 188 deaths have been reported in the past 24 hours, announced the ministry of Health. Brazil, which has 210 million inhabitants, is the 6th country in terms of number of dead of the Covid-19. It is the 3rd for the case of contamination, behind the United States, by far the most affected country in the world, and Russia. The number of deaths has doubled in just 11 days in Brazil, according to figures from the ministry. The number of new dead daily had only once before exceeded the psychological barrier of the thousand, with 1 179 reported Tuesday. The new cases of infection confirmed in 24 hours amounted to 18 508.

In spite of the progress very worrying the virus, the president of extreme right-wing Jair Bolsonaro still has Thursday called for a resumption of activity, in the name of saving the economy. But almost all of the 27 States of the huge country have decreed confinement, more or less flexible, and observed less and less by a population tired of seeing their movements restricted since the end of march. The State of Sao Paulo, economic and cultural capital of Brazil, is by far the most affected by the pandemic, with about a quarter of the dead (5 558 Thursday) and cases of contamination (73 739). The one in Rio de Janeiro, where the progression of the coronavirus has greatly accelerated in recent days, is the second home in the country, with 3 412 dead and 32 089-confirmed cases.
