Abriata was led to the navy's notoriously infamous military school Esma. It is estimated that 5000 people were held captive here and subjected to torture after the military coup in 1976.

Many of the prisoners were murdered by putting them on board military aircraft and throwing them out on the open sea or the river Plata. It was known as "the dirty war".
