71 sexual abuse cases: nurses accused of raping patients

The Berlin public prosecutor's office has brought charges against a 34-year-old nurse who is said to have sexually abused and raped six mentally and physically disabled people for more than two years. The authority accuses the man of a total of 71 cases of sexual abuse of the sick and needy, as announced on Friday.

Eleven cases are said to be sexual assaults and 47 are rapes. The 34-year-old is also said to have produced and distributed child pornography. The man has therefore been in custody since the end of September 2022.

Accordingly, he worked as a curative education nurse in a facility in the Berlin district of Biesdorf. In this function he is said to have been responsible for the residents of a residential group for adults with mental and multiple disabilities. Due to their impairments, they are said to have been only able to a limited extent to form or express a concrete will.

The 34-year-old is said to have used this to perform various sexual acts on the women and men in the residential group between July 2020 and August 2022. According to the public prosecutor's office, the alleged victims could not be questioned due to their impairments.

The nurse is said to have filmed and photographed the deeds himself. Investigators from the State Criminal Police Office came across the files on what happened in the residential group during searches for child pornography – the man had already been sentenced for this in 2020.

According to the information, the public prosecutor wants to obtain not only a conviction but also an order for preventive detention. The Berlin district court must now decide whether to admit the charges.
