2nd Bundesliga: Ito saves Magdeburg point against clever Heidenheimer

The Japanese Tatsuya Ito saved a lucky point against 1. FC Heidenheim in injury time for 1. FC Magdeburg in the 2nd Bundesliga. The Japanese (90.3 minutes) used the first shot on the Heidenheim goal to win a point. So the promoted team came to a lucky draw on Friday evening with the 1: 1 (0: 1). Denis Thomalla (23rd) had previously given the guests the lead in front of 19,352 spectators in the MDCC Arena. The Ostalbstädter ranked fourth, the Elbestadt in 15th place.

"We always believed in it, we set off fireworks. Even if it looks like we don't have any solutions from the outside. But the plan was to push them in far enough back until the gap opens up," said Baris Atik.

FCM coach Christian Titz left his winning team unchanged from the weekend. In Hamburg, the FCM presented itself cautiously, but was determined and efficient in the transition game - a tactic with which today's opponent has worked its way up to fourth place in the table. FCM started offensively, pressed against Heidenheim early on and thus secured a lot of possession in the early minutes.

Heidenheim waited for mistakes by the Elbe city-dwellers, who were again faced with the task at which coach Titz's team had often failed during the season: to create scoring chances and goals against opponents who were defensively strong and switched quickly. Magdeburg still had a lot of ball possession today, but passes and inputs into the penalty area prevented the attentive marking of the guests - and so there were no scoring chances. Instead, as so often, the guest scored: Cristiano Piccini misjudged the duel on the outside line and at the end of the counterattack Thomalla scored the lead.

The deficit didn't change anything for the Titz-Elf in terms of play - the opponent remained cautious, Magdeburg ran up, but only came to harmless conclusions. Tatsuya Ito came on at the break and should be more dangerous in the last third. In addition, Piccini remained in the dressing room, with Alexander Bittroff playing for him. The game did not change significantly as a result of the changes: The FCM ran at it, but remained without fortune, while Heidenheim repeatedly came into dangerous play on the counterattack.

It took almost 60 minutes for Magdeburg to appear in front of the guests' box, but Andreas Müller's input was still clarified. While a few whistles could be heard for a short time from individual blocks of the stadium, it was mainly the Ultras behind the guest goal that drove Magdeburg forward. The Magdeburg attack was rewarded in the end by Ito's deflected shot.
